Sandwiches have taken a new shape at Zookz in central Phoenix.

This neighborhood sandwich shop is serving up toasted circular pockets of goodness derived from fond food memories.

Zookz unique sandwiches have come to fruition thanks to owner Carole Meyer. She grew up enjoying round sandwiches her grandmother toasted using a vintage handheld cooker.

Meyer wanted to recreate this childhood favorite but needed to update the process. By re-engineering the device into a more efficient electric version, sandwiches could be created quicker and Zookz was born.

Sandwiches range from savory to sweet and are all labeled by number on the menu.

For breakfast, I love the No. 11 that comes with two poached eggs, bacon, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, tomatoes and fresh basil.

My lunch or dinner favorite is the No. 35: Thinly sliced roast beef, crisp bacon, fresh tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese and Zookz horseradish sauce.

Coming in a close second is the No. 20: Thinly sliced turkey, crisp bacon, fresh avocado and tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese and Zookz sweet heat mustard sauce.

For dessert, how could anyone resist the No. 55: Peanut butter, Nutella, bananas, roasted almonds and powdered sugar.

The amount of flavor that is packed into these pockets is surprising. I attribute that to the fusing of the fillings during the toasting process. Meyer said she experimented with numerous combinations of ingredients before she ended up with the final menu.

I can honestly say I have loved all I have tried.

I also am happy to inform you that Zookz recently obtained a liquor license and is now serving beer, wine, Bloody Marys, screwdrivers and mimosas.

Keep your eyes open for my favorite, the weekend special, which includes a sandwich plus a mimosa!
