Every year the AZ Diamondbacks launch new food options at Chase field that spark public interest. These unique creations with clever and catchy names add to the excitement of the season. When the press release came out and we saw the list, we knew we had to go get in on the action.

We sent our very own WhereShouldWeEat.com’s “He” and “She” to a game to be Guiney pigs and sample these AZ Diamondback exclusives. As they guiney pigged-out they each gave their rating of “Thumbs Up” or “Thumps Down” on each ballgame bite, let’s see what made the cut!

Cheeseburger Dog: Made from char-grilled hamburgers that have IMG_6434 (1)been ground up and mixed with chopped smoked bacon, dill pickles, green onion and Cheddar cheese. The “dog” is breaded with milk and seasoned flour, then deep fried until crispy and served on a hot dog bun topped with more chopped smoked bacon, shredded iceberg lettuce, diced tomato and our house made secret sauce.

Price: $10.00 at Big Dawgs on the main concourse and Extreme Loaded Dogs on the Diamond Level.

The first thing I liked about this hybrid/wanna-be hotdog was the creativity. I can honestly say I have never had a burger shaped like a hot dog before. It was visually appealing, full flavorful and over all just plain fun! The killer ingredient is the secret sauce, it really bumps this burger to the next level. Plus, the confusion on people’s faces when asked what you are eating and you tell them it’s a hamburger is priceless.

Almost everyone in line ordering the Cheeseburger Dog kept asking the same question, “Is it a hot dog?” The answer is no, it’s a cheeseburger rolled up like a hot dog. Upon delivery I didn’t think it looked very good. It was covered with some great toppings but the “dog” itself was a little scary looking to me. I don’t think I have ever had a hamburger that was deep-fried. But one bite and I was sold. I especially like the house sauce on top and the bits of bacon ground up in the meat.

IMG_6471Applewood Bacon Grilled Cheese: Crispy Applewood-smoked bacon with Arizona garlic-black pepper cheddar on gourmet bread. Other featured sandwiches include The Arizona Cheese, Southwest Cheese and Pit Smoked Cheese.

Who doesn’t love grilled cheese? Well, I loved this one even more because the cheese exclusively comes from Arizona Farm Cheese. The sandwich was huge and cut into four separate pieces. The combo of garlic-black pepper and salty bacon was nice, the bread was grilled to that ideal crisp crunch and the cheese was melted to perfection giving you the mouth to sandwich stringy-bridge effect.

First some advice, get it early. By the time we got around to trying out this new option they were running out of options. We happen to get the last bacon version and they still seemed to be working out a few kinks with knowing how many of the sandwiches they had left. While I enjoyed the garlic brushed toast on the outside, it didn’t actually contain a ton of cheese for me. I do think it is a good choice for 2-3 people to share at only $12 you get around 4 actual slices of sandwich and that’s a good bargain in the park. But in the end I felt it was something I could have easily made at home watching the game on the TV.

IMG_6432 (1)Chile Verde Mac Dog: Hot dog topped with green chile mac and pepper jack cheese.

Price: $10.00 at Big Dawgs on the main concourse.

How do the Diamondbacks add a little spice to the typical hot dog?? Carb it up with some pepper jack mac and cheese of course!  This tasty dog had a weirdly comforting element that flashed me back to my elementary school cafeteria. What’s better than feeling like a kid while watching the greatest game on earth? They nailed it with this guilty pleasure monstrosity!

This was simply fantastic! It didn’t hurt that hot dogs and mac & cheese are some of my favorite guilty pleasures in the food world. The foot long had a great snap to it and the mac & cheese wasn’t overly saucy so it didn’t soak the bun completely, leaving a good enough structure that you could pick it up. I’m hoping this becomes a staple on the menu because I’d happily get it every year.

IMG_6477Fried Bread Pudding Bites: Served with Jack Daniel’s sauce.

Price: $8.00 at Extreme Loaded Dogs on the Diamond Level and Big Dawgs on the main concourse.

First off, I like that it was easy to consume. The bites come in a cardboard container with a small fork which kept spills on my shirt to a minimum. Freshly made, these warm bites are soft and a bit chewy and can be described as an under-done cinnamon bun. The Jack Daniels drizzle was the perfect addition as it pooled at the bottom of the container so you could dip for more!

My first bite into this dessert I wasn’t all that excited by it. It didn’t have that bread pudding texture that I look for when ordering this dish. However after getting to the middle and bottom of the container the bites had soaked into the Jack Daniel’s sauce and it was wonderful! Not too sweet and the bites had soaked in the sauce enough to make them less dry and more reminiscent of the traditional dish you get in a restaurant.

Craft Beer: Varieties of Craft Beer

Available in the newly-renovated Draft Room and at a Craft Beer portable.

Now, I am an All-American gal who loves her typical American beers at any ball game. But, everyone likes options and since craft beer is in high demand these days, I like that variety is available. Warning! Long lines formed at the portable kiosk.

Gone are the days of only being able to get 1 or 2 beers from the big companies with large pockets. All over the valley craft beers are growing in popularity as people like to support locally owned businesses. So it was a nice option to be able to try out a few different beers I had never heard of or knew I loved.

IMG_6482Churro Dog (2015 NEW food item): Warm cinnamon churro sitting inside a long john chocolate glazed donut, which is then topped with frozen yogurt, caramel and chocolate sauces.

This dessert was way TOO much. The donut bun wasn’t your typical soft donut but more of a bread consistency. There were too many dry ingredients and you almost needed to let the ice cream melt so the donut and churro became soggy and were easier to consume. The end product of soupy sweetness wasn’t appealing to me at all. But, it is still a fan favorite and long lines form for this messy treat especially during the 7th inning stretch.

We never got a chance to try it last year when it came out so we had to add it to the review this year. Sadly, I could only handle one bite of this dish. I love a good churro but somehow, this one was a little on the dry side for me and while the ice cream did help it didn’t entice me enough to keep eating. It simply was just too sweet & dry for my taste buds. There are so many other awesome ball park food options I decided to call it quits on this one after my one bite.
