He Said

I remember the first few times I drove by Beckett’s table. It was always crowded and reminded me of a Houston’s type restaurant. When I finally got the time to visit I fell in love. I have been back many times since. From my first time to my last, I almost always have the honor of chatting a little with Justin Beckett the chef and owner. I wish more chefs would take a moment and meet their guests. It gives you a chance to understand why they built the restaurant the way they did (look around and see how many pig figures you can identify throughout the restaurant) and why the menu is what it is (Justin loves his Pork). This menu in my opinion is phenomenal. The restaurant is warm and inviting with my favorite feature, an open kitchen. Take a seat at the large family table and meet some fellow diners or get a table for your party, just be forewarned the word has already gotten out about Beckett’s so make a reservation or be prepared to wait on the weekends.

I know you all liked us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and I encourage you to do the same to Chef Beckett. That way you get pics of the days specials right on your phone. It makes me wish I could go every day when I see his posts. My all-time favorite is his pork Osso Bucco. It is so tender and the flavors are exquisite. Typically it comes with a side of Spatzel and while I usually find Spatzel boring and bland, this dish has great flavor and mixes well. If you are looking for something a little less porky, we also loved the grilled cheese and tomato soup appetizer. It is shareable or you could easily have this yourself. Something that sounds so simple I could see why you might feel like passing it up, but trust me when I say that the simplicity in this case, is not what I would end up with at home if I was making it. But back to some more pork, the dessert. Chocolate covered bacon, homemade peanut butter whip, and homemade marshmallow, on graham crackers. Do I even need to expand on this? Given, I am one that believes everything is better with bacon, but in this case it is something special. I recommend for your first time, trying a little of each item separate, then putting it all together for the amazing combination. Granted you will need to run to the gym the next day to work all the calories off, but I’d gladly run a mile (or 5) for this restaurant.

She Said

I wasn’t sure when “He” first brought me to Beckett’s. But as soon as I walked in, the welcoming staff and the warm atmosphere drew me in.

We sat outside on the small but pleasant patio. Our waitress couldn’t have been friendlier . She shared with us Chef Justin Beckett’s story behind opening the restaurant and told us all about his love for Pork. As a pork…more specific…bacon fan I was anxious to try some grub. We started with Beckett’s original grilled cheese. These sandwich bites were filled with four different cheeses and a bit of pancetta. It was served with a roasted red pepper tomato soup for dunking. It was heavenly!

For dinner I  had Beckett’s table signature fork tender short ribs. Wow, these WERE tender! It came apart with ease but kept a hearty consistency. The flavors were rich and fantastic. It was served with creamy mashed potatoes and veggies. Comfort on a plate! We tried the smoked red onion & apple spaetzle. Having enjoyed spaetzle in Germany on several occasions I’m always down to find a good spaetzle here in AZ. Nicely done Beckett. Not too mushy or salty.

Just when I thought I was too full for dessert, we saw S’more’s on the menu. Anyone who knows me, knows I have a love affair with S’mores.  This was the ULTIMATE S’mores: chocolate dipped bacon, caramel, housemade marshmallow, whipped peanut butter and graham crackers. It was the best mix of sweet, savory and salty. The surprising bacon and creamy peanut butter are perfect with this ol’ campfire dessert. I talked about it for days. To top off this experience Chef Beckett took the time to come over and chat with us. I noticed throughout the night he really tried to visit all the tables.  Beckett’s table was a delight and is definitely a table I want to visit again and again!
