I’m a huge fan of fish tacos, so I decided to head to old town Gilbert for lunch at SoCal Fish Taco Company. I visited at noon one of the hottest days of the year, so the 15-minute wait inside was definitely preferable to any length of time sitting on the patio. I do look forward to the weather cooling down so I can sit out there, as it was a very chic, modern seating area, reminiscent of The Vig.

Although it wasn’t exactly “soup weather”, I ordered a cup of clam chowder because that’s always a test of a good fish restaurant. It came out before the entrees, perfectly portioned and with plenty of oyster crackers. Creamy and thick, it had great flavor and next time I will order an extra one to take home. It was that good.

Although there were many menu options such as crab cakes and shrimp ceviche, my companion and I both went traditional and ordered fish tacos. She had the blackened grouper and I chose the mahi mahi.

Each taco was created with two corn tortillas, which was necessary to keep them from falling apart. There were two per order and they were each piled high with fresh broiled fish, shredded cabbage, cotija cheese and a baja sauce that we couldn’t get enough of. The friendly waiter told us it was “basically a mix of salsa and ranch”, and I made a mental note to try that combination at home sometime. The mahi tacos also had a really delicious mango salsa, which perfectly complemented the large chunks of white fish.

Each order of tacos came with a small side of ranch beans and rice. The rice wasn’t exciting, but pleasant enough, like it had been cooked in chicken broth. The beans were terrific, and I wish I could pinpoint why they were so good…they just tasted different than your run of the mill pinto beans. It was a really great side dish.

We didn’t order dessert, although I will save room next time for the ice cream cookie sandwich. It’s the only dessert offered, so I imagine it’s pretty good.

I will definitely return to this restaurant for dinner, so I can sit on the patio and try some other dishes like the shrimp po’ boy and fresh oysters on the half shell. Paired with one of the many adult beverage choices, I think that will be a winning combination!

Picture a relaxing beach with cool temperatures and go get your fish taco on!
